Happy New Year

Progress Log:

I have successfully finished work on my high poly (high polygon count) model. I have added more complex patterns and tweaks and am ready to go through with painting. I created a nut and bolt styled circular model which I used for where the crate walls are held together by screws etc. and i added them around the edges and more prominent parts of my model, I am rather pleased with the outcome.

In the top of the model I have added a data-pad, two lights and a signal antenna for a more detailed finish, I will be adding an emission map over the top of the lights to give them a glow effect, adding more of a stylised, science fiction look on my crate. I didn’t add many more complicated parts to it as I feel it is meant to fit in with a Star Wars-like environment, and so I have attempted to make a bridge between the simple look and shape of the crate and the more stylised, creative and complex look of modern science fiction crates that we see today in films and games.

When unwrapping I struggled, this is an ongoing theme as UV unwraps are probably the weakest part of the course for me. I used an automatic unwrap, which in turn made the entirety of the map a MESS. However, most of the mess was coming from the screwbolt shapes I had designed and slapped on, as well as the small blinkers (lights). I chose to use a tool I discovered: ‘stack’ which stacks all selected shells of the UV map. The screws had been split into over 900. SINGULAR. PIECES. Eventually, after a long wait, these pieces stacked and will make painting SO much easier. The blinkers had been mixed in and so I manually selected their shells and moved them– accompanied by any other light-emitting pieces of the model I had planned, to the top-left corner.

Sadly, my Substance Painter exports remain unfinished and so I will return at a later date to finish this. I will attempt to download Substance Painter on my home device to speed up the process. The clock is ticking.

deadline is NEXT FRIDAY from the current date: 24/02/2020.

had software issues on other college PC’s so I am going to hopefully polish off my crate work by Wednesday 22nd.
